Wayne Johnson eyes turnaround at Grays Harbor

By Bill W (Seattle, WA) — Wayne Johnson and Two-C Racing team struggled a bit through the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway near Alger, Washington last weekend, finishing tenth in the finale. An inspection afterwards found a bent racecar. The Oklahoma City driver has always been strong at Grays Harbor Raceway near Elma, and the Fred Brownfield Classic will commence there this weekend.

Things started Thursday at Skagit. “It was heavy and rough on Thursday,” says Wayne. “We just kind of maintained in the heat and Qualifier. We went from third to second in the heat, and started and finished third in the Qualifier. That put us 11th in points overall.”

Wayne started the feature inside row six. “We just weren’t very good in the feature Thursday,” he says. “We got a horrible start and ended up 14th. We just weren’t very good at all.”

The team saw a turnaround early on Friday. “We were better on Friday,” says Wayne. “The track was more to our liking. We were able to run from sixth to fourth in the heat, and we won the Qualifier.”

There was promise in the feature as well, before Wayne was taken out by another competitor. “We were pretty good,” he says. “We were running fifth, and got run over from behind. We had to go to the back there, and came back and finished 15th that night.”

He would finish the first night 12th in points overall, and started in row six for Saturday’s $15,000 to win finale. “We ran tenth in the final,” says Wayne. “We’d been having some trouble with our car, and we took it apart afterwards. We found out it was bent pretty badly. The rear-end was bent out of square about 3/8 of an inch. So we’re planning on running the car we won Knoxville with a couple weeks back at Elma.”
