Inside Line Promotions – TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 21, 2022) – A hill pill draw hampered Garet Williamson throughout the Ronald Laney Memorial King of the 360s.
The Bryant Paver Motorsports driver started near the back of his heat race during both preliminary nights at East Bay Raceway Park last weekend before an incident in a B Main during the finale ended the event early.
“With that many cars a format like that is tough when you draw toward the back of your heat race both qualifying nights,” Williamson said. “It’s a tough start. I think we were fast. Our lap times were as good as guys running up front so I don’t think we had a lack of speed. It was the way our weekend went and you’ll have those from time to time.”
Williamson, who was one of more than 55 drivers competing, advanced from eighth to sixth during his heat race on Thursday. He faced a similar starting position and ended sixth on Friday. Both nights ended with a run from fifth to fourth place in a B Main.
Williamson finished sixth in a heat race on Saturday, starting him on the outside of the second row in a B Main. It didn’t take him long to drive up to battle with veteran Tim Shaffer for the top spot.
“We got racing with Tim and I made a mistake,” he said. “It knocked the rear end out of it. That seemed to cap off a tough weekend.
“It’s definitely a different type of track. Nothing else races like East Bay. Everything you do normally doesn’t seem to work there. I think going into next year we’ll have a good starting spot for our race car. Hopefully we can draw better and I think that’d be huge for us having a successful weekend.”
Williamson plans to take the next month off before starting the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour season March 18-19 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, during the 49th annual Spring Nationals.
