Wednesdays with Wayne – Back on Track in Lawton!

(Bill W) May 24, 2017 – Getting back the basics has been the formula for Wayne Johnson and the Two-C Racing #2c team. They’d just like to get some racing in now after getting rained out at Creek County Speedway near Sapulpa, Oklahoma last Friday, and finishing fifth at Lawton Speedway with the ASCS Red River region Saturday. The Lucas Oil ASCS National series is scheduled for two events in Colorado this weekend. Saturday, the El Paso County Raceway in Calhan will play host, and the series moves to Phillips County Raceway in Holyoke Sunday.

The draw for the heats went as usual at Lawton Saturday. “We drew 70 out of 72 for the heats!” says Wayne. “So that was normal. It’s just crazy. It’s part of it.”

Starting in row four, Wayne would charge to a second-place finish in the heat. “We were really good there,” he says. “We went back to the basics like the week before. We were able to drive from the back up to second. We were decent. The car was still a little free. The racetrack was already blowing dust in the heats. They really had no choice though. They had had so much rain…they had to roll it down, or it was going to be rough.”

Looking for a change in luck for the feature redraw, Wayne made a deal with Sam Hafertepe Jr. They would draw each other’s pills. Wayne promptly drew the pole for Sam, while Sam drew the six for Wayne. “We did him a favor, but actually, it worked out for me too,” says Wayne. “I would have drawn the eight for myself, but he drew me the six!”

Starting outside row three, Wayne got stronger as the feature went on. “I thought it was going to lock down rubber, but we still weren’t tight enough,” he says. “We were too free. The balance was good though. At the end of the race, looking at the lap times, we were the fastest car on the track and we ended up with a top five. That’s really encouraging heading into this weekend. We’re definitely moving in the right direction.”

The tracks in Colorado should be new to just about everyone. “We don’t have the experience at those tracks for sure, but no one else does either,” says Wayne. “I know the weather has been crazy there like everywhere else. There are a lot of races going on this weekend, so if there’s a change in plans, we’ll definitely have somewhere to race around here.”
