Wednesday’s With Wayne – 2015 In Review

Wednesdays with Wayne – 2015 in Review!

(Bill W) November 11, 2015 – The Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team finished the 2015 strong, and came just short of a second ASCS National Series title. A late run that included a win at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Texas, Wayne’s sixth win of the season, propelled the Knoxville, Iowa driver into second in the series’ final point tally.

The season got off to a rough start in the “Sunshine State”. “We had a half dozen DNF’s down in Florida to start the year,” says Wayne. “It was one thing after another. That wasn’t a good start for us, but things picked up a little bit when we headed back north.”

Things started in the Midwest in March with a second place run with plenty of talent gathered at 81 Speedway. In April, Wayne would visit Victory Lane at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa. It was the inaugural race for the National Sprint League. “It was big to win that first race,” he says. “Our name will always be the answer to the trivia question of who won the first NSL race. That was a good win for us.”

The team made the decision to run full-time with the ASCS National series, but a string of bad luck and DNF’s followed. “We were struggling there for a while,” says Wayne. “We got to where we were tinkering with too much stuff. We were just trying to get better, and that set us back. We’re going to be consistent with our stuff next year. We’re already getting ready for next year.”

Strong runs in May included a win at Knoxville Raceway and two other podium finishes, one with the NSL. Wayne gained strength with ASCS with a win at Devil’s Bowl in June, and four podiums and six top fives in their Pacific Northwest tour in July.

A fourth place run in the 360 Nationals followed, and Wayne qualified for the Knoxville Nationals aboard his special paint scheme featuring the Bob Vielhauer #12x.

After the Nationals, Wayne reeled off three wins, one in Moberly, Missouri, one at I-80 Speedway in Nebraska, and another tally at the Winternationals at Devil’s Bowl. The strong finish allowed him to pass Johnny Herrera and finish second in the final ASCS standings. “We really finished strong towards the end of the year,” he says. “We just ran out of races as far as winning the ASCS deal. It was great to get another win at Devil’s Bowl. We’re really looking forward to next year already.”
