Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Oct. 10, 2018) – Channin Tankersley is seeking to capture his third ASCS Gulf South Region championship in the last five years during the season finale this Saturday.
The last three ASCS Gulf South Region races have rained out, including the scheduled season finale twice. With a nice forecast predicted, Tankersley and Old School Racing will venture to Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas, in search of becoming only the second driver in region history to win at least three championships. Tankersley only has to take a green flag to accrue enough points to clinch the title.
“It’s always nice whenever you can put a whole year together,” he said. “It shows how good your program is. I don’t think we’ve had a DNF all year. That’s pretty solid for any team. It’s really nice to be able to be successful around home with all of our friends and family that support sprint car racing.”
Tankersley leads the region with eight podium finishes, including seven in a row, and nine top fives in 10 races. He is also atop the region with five feature victories, which is tied for his most earned in a single season.
“The goal is to perform and do well as usual,” he said. “Golden Triangle has been one of our best tracks this year. We’ve been strong every time we’ve shown up. We’ll try to charge hard and put ourselves in a good position for another win.”
Tankersley competed last weekend at I-30 Speedway during the 31st annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals with the ASCS Mid-South Region. The doubleheader began on Friday with Tankersley advancing from fourth to third place in a heat race. However, a ninth-place result following a crash in a qualifier relegated him toward the back of a B Main. Tankersley finished 12th to end the night early.
“We did well in the heat race, but someone ran us over on the start of the qualifier and that really put us in a hole,” he said. “With the format being all about points you can’t take a hit like that and still be in a solid position.”
Tankersley finished where he lined up – fifth – during a heat race to kick off Saturday’s event finale. That just missed a spot into a qualifier and lined Tankersley up on the outside of the front row for a C Main. He won that race to transfer into the back of a B Main. Tankersley rallied from 13th to sixth in the consolation race, but was three positions shy of claiming a transfer.
“It was probably the best we’ve felt there, but I just got messed up in the heat race,” he said. “We drew the first heat race and the track was so locked down. We got one or two cars on the start and were in a good position. I went down and hit a rut and bicycled and lost the positions I gained so that put us behind the eight ball.”
