Inside Line Promotions – EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada (May 29, 2018) – Cody Masse opened his 2018 racing season by running in the top 10 during a rain-shortened feature with the NSA Series on Friday night at Castrol Raceway.
“It was our first time out for the season and we were really using the night as a test and tune to get ready for the ASCS schedule,” he said. “We were rained out the week before in Great Falls so before we made the 12-and-a-half hour drive to Rapid City next week we wanted to make sure that everything was running properly from the winter.”
Masse started on the pole of his heat race after qualifying 10th out of 18 cars.
“I got a really good start on the initial start, but there was a mess behind me so we restarted,” he said. “I didn’t get quite as great of a start the second time and got passed for the lead. There was a red flag later in the race and my crew told me there were only four cars left. It was my understanding that it didn’t matter where you finished in your heat as long as you were in the top four so I felt no need to be aggressive the remainder of the race.”
Masse lined up 12th for the feature.
“I got up to 10th in the first couple of laps,” he said. “I had a really good race car. I was being a little cautious and letting things play out in front of me. The guys ahead of me were racing pretty hard and with what our goals were I didn’t think it was anything I needed to be a part of.
“Ten laps in things kind of settled down and I was trying to start picking some guys off when the caution came out for a guy who blew a tire. Then it started raining before they restarted the race and the night was over. It was disappointing, but we accomplished what we set out to do, which was to make some laps, make sure the car was running right and to get some good setup notes to go back there with later in the year for the Gold Cup.”
The ASCS Frontier Region will begin its season on Friday at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D., before venturing to Gillette Thunder Speedway in Gillette, Wyo., on Saturday. Masse will see the two tracks for the first time.
“Black Hills will be by far the biggest track I’ve ever raced,” he said. “It’s a half mile and I’ve never raced anything longer than 3/8. I’m excited to experience that for the first time. I’ll probably have a mindset for that night like I did at Edmonton and just try to have a smooth night without any issues.
“The following night at Gillette should be a little closer to what we’re used to since I think it’s a 3/8 mile. It looks like a fun and racy place from the videos I’ve seen.”
