Mann Defends Super Race Day Title

T.J. Buffenbarger, OWENDALE, Mich. (July 11, 2009) – Brett Mann captured his second straight Super Race Day win at Owendale Speedway in Saturday night’s 25-lap Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by ARP main event.

Mann successfully defended his Super Race Day title after starting on the front row and holding off challenges from Steve Irwin and series point leader Gregg Dalman.

“Steve (Irwin) spun his tires on the start and I was able to get ahead of him,” said Mann about the initial start. “I have a good feel for this track, it reminds me of one I test tires on a lot.”

Irwin and Mann started on the front row with Mann getting the jump at the start with Dalman, Tim Norman, and Dustin Daggett following. The first five broke away from the field during multiple restarts including a bizarre red flag for a flip by Robert Huisken after a sprint car reentered the speedway after a caution flag period under green flag conditions. Everyone was uninjured in the incidents.

Mann, Irwin, and Dalman battled through slower cars, sometimes three wide, clearing the slower traffic to battle for the lead early in the event. Dalman eventually moved past Irwin for second just before Daggett disposed of Norman for the third spot. Irwin and Daggett battled for position with Daggett eventually ending up backwards in turn one. Daggett later brought out a second caution flag, retiring him from the event.

As the race wore on Mann became stronger by turning smooth and steady restarts and laps around the ¼-mile oval, saving his tires while other competitors jockeyed for position. In the end Mann crossed the finish line first over Dalman, Irwin, Norman, and Ryan Grubaugh.

Mann, Ryan Ruhl, and Dalman won heat race events for the 21 car field. Daggett won the fast car dash. With his second place finish Dalman maintained the point lead over Mann.
