Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (Oct. 16, 2023) – Jordon Mallett garnered a pair of top-10 finishes at Devil’s Bowl Speedway last weekend.
Mallett opened the 50th annual Devil’s Bowl Winter Nationals with a 10th-place result on Friday before tying a career-best outing with a seventh-place run on Saturday. The two top 10s helped Mallett secure a third-place finish in the ASCS National Tour championship standings as the final event of the season is show-up points only.
“We didn’t have the best weekend at Devil’s Bowl, but we did just enough,” he said.
Mallett qualified third quickest in his group and won a heat race to start Friday’s program. That ranked him seventh in points to line up on the inside of the fourth row in the A Main.
“We were good early in the night, but we got ourselves gear bound for the feature and lost a few spots,” he said. “We were fine for the first part of the race. Everybody was freight-training the top. The track was getting slicker and further around. I decided eventually the bottom would have to come in. On a restart I wandered to the bottom trying to make up some ground and I slipped from seventh to 10th. I moved back up top and fell back in line.”
Mallett improved his qualifying result on Saturday when he timed in second quickest in his group. A third-place result in a heat race ranked him sixth in overall points to start the feature sixth.
“On Saturday we were good early on, but the track was so fast in the feature,” he said. “We learned a couple of things Friday that we wanted to do on Saturday. We were quicker in qualifying and in our heat race. I felt really good in the feature. I rode around fifth for the most part. I knew I needed to keep my nose clean and have a good pace. We had a couple of restarts and the track was moving down. We had two different restarts and on both I got tight going into turn one. I tried something different both times and both times I lost a spot.
“Saturday was a little bit of a disappointment because we had a top-five car. My car was good in the long run. On the short run after those restarts we just couldn’t get going through the first corner as good as we needed and it cost us those couple of positions.”
The weekend results give Mallett 21 top 10s during ASCS National Tour competition this year – his most in a single season.
Mallett’s next sprint car event is Oct. 26-28 at Texarkana 67 Speedway in Texarkana, Ark., for the Ralph Henson Memorial and the 36th annual COMP CAMS Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier.
