Inside Line Promotions – WAKEENEY, Kan. (July 4, 2023) – Jordon Mallett is taking the positive out of a frustrating weekend in the Midwest.
It began on Friday at Boone County Raceway in Albion, Neb., where Mallett qualified third quickest in his group and won a heat race to garner the fifth starting spot in the ASCS National Tour A Main.
“We were good early on Friday,” he said. “We qualified good and felt good in the heat race. The car was balanced and we were really pleased, but we just missed it in the A Main. It was a poor performance in my opinion. I couldn’t get the car to do what I wanted to do. It had no side bite in it and we just weren’t very good. That was frustrating to fall back and finish 12th. I knew by the flag stand of the first lap we were in salvage-mode. I don’t know if we sealed over a right rear tire early on, but I couldn’t get any right rear drive. The longer the race went we were able to claw back a couple of positions, but overall we just weren’t as good as we should have been.”
The team then ventured to WaKeeney Speedway for a race on Saturday.
“It was a trip just to get to WaKeeney,” he said. “The truck wouldn’t start on Friday. Then leaving the pits we blew the pressure power steering line. Thankfully that happened in the pits and not on the interstate. There were some guys who offered us a hand. They had a shop nearby and built us a new line to get us back going so we’re appreciative of them. It put us behind the eight ball as we weren’t able to drive throughout the night. It was a good tow to WaKeeney so we were behind from the start on Saturday. It didn’t stop from there. We went to do maintenance and I wasn’t pleased so we had to change motors in the parking lot.”
Mallett timed in second quickest in his group and he finished fourth in a heat race. He capped the night by gaining a position to end eighth in the main event.
“The track was real narrow and hard to do anything with,” he said. “It was wide open and never slowed down or got to where it was racy. Everyone just took what they could and moved on.”
It marked Mallett’s 12th top 10 of the season with the ASCS National Tour. He remains third in the championship standings.
Next up for Mallett is the Steve King Memorial this Friday and Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park in Dodge City, Kan.
