Inside Line Promotions – HIGHLANDS, Texas (June 20, 2017) – Zane Lawrence scored a top-five finish to highlight last weekend’s ASCS Gulf South Region doubleheader.
Lawrence kicked off the weekend on Friday at Bronco Motor Speedway in Cleveland, Texas, where he started on the outside of the third row in a heat race. Lawrence maneuvered to a runner-up result to garner the most points out of any competitor. Unfortunately, he pulled the highest number – eight – during the random redraw to start the main event on the outside of the fourth row.
“We had a good car in the heat race and were able to make our way to the front, but of course our bad luck in pill draws struck again and I pulled an eight,” he said. “We had to start the feature a few rows further back than we wanted to.”
Lawrence made up ground in the feature as he advanced three positions to finish fifth. That was his eighth top five of the season.
“The car was good the first half of the race,” he said. “The wing post broke about halfway through. It was jammed and I couldn’t get it to slide back any further, which presented a problem, but we overcame it for another top five.”
Lawrence rounded out the doubleheader on Saturday at Battleground Speedway, where he posted a heat race win after starting fourth.
“The night started off pretty good,” he said. “We were good in the heat race and going into the feature. I think we were definitely going to be in contention for a win there.”
Luck showed as well as Lawrence redrew the No. 2, starting him on the outside of the front row for the main event.
Lawrence remained in second early in the feature before a battle with a lapped car cost him, ultimately sending him on a wild ride.
“That’s definitely not something that you want to have happen when you’re trying to a race for a win, but that’s racing, too,” he said.
That incident ended Lawrence’s night early and he was credited with a 20th-place finish. He remains second in the ASCS Gulf South Region championship standings.
Lawrence will take this weekend off before resuming competition on July 1 at Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, with the Sprint Car Bandits Series. Lawrence ranks third in the Sprint Car Bandits Series championship standings.
