Lady Luck on Drown’s Side at Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas (May 18, 2012) – Derek Drown picked off his second ASCS 305-ci Sprint Car feature win of the season by returning to victory lane in Friday night’s 25-lap main event at Lady Luck Speedway, picking up the $1,200 winner’s share in the process.

After topping the opening night of March’s Beat the Heat card at Lady Luck Speedway, Drown raced past Preston Peebles II on the eighth round and then sputtered to the line over the final circuits with a fuel cell that was running dangerously dry.

While Drown originally started inside the third row alongside Beat the Heat finale winner John Carney II, it was Kyle McCutcheon and Peebles II leading the way to the green flag. And, after battling into the lead on the initial circuit, McCutcheon looped it exiting turn four to negate the initial opening lap with Brandon Schure coming to a stop as well.

With the lineup re-racked due to a pair of cars on the inside lane stopping, Peebles II outgunned Billy Briley for the point on the ensuing restart and set the pace until the eighth round when Amarillo’s Drown claimed command.

Drown began working traffic two laps later, leaving Peebles II, Briley and Carney II to dice for the runner-up position until that triumvirate ran afoul of a lapped car on the 15th lap, with all four crashing to a halt in turn two to bring out a red flag. Peebles II and Briley were done for the night, while Carney II returned briefly with damage that would ultimately send him pitside as well.

Sputtering as action resumed, Drown babied it around the low side over the final rounds to put the No. 74b in victory lane as Colt Treharn and Brandon Black battled for runner-up honors.

New Mexico’s Treharn claimed the second spot in the final rounds, with apparent third-place finisher Black disqualified after post-race inspection revealed his nose wing extended too far forward.

After his opening lap spin, McCutcheon rallied from the tail of the field to claim the show position, with Leighton Crouch and Rickey Hood rounding out the top five.

McCutcheon, Scott Pace and Cary Pendley topped Friday night’s heat race action.

Action continues for the ASCS 305’s with another $1,200-to-win tilt at Abilene Speedway on Saturday night, May 19.
