Inside Line Promotions – DANBURY, Texas (Nov. 9, 2015) – This year was a different one for Ray Allen Kulhanek, who transitioned into a full-time car owner.
Kulhanek, who came up 17 points shy of claiming his sixth career ASCS Gulf South Region championship, took over the team reigns from David Miller late this season after the duo combined to score four wins, including two with the ASCS Gulf South Region to extend a winning streak with the series to seven consecutive seasons.
“I want to thank David and Beverly Miller for the opportunity the last few years,” he said. “We had a lot of success together and their support has been immeasurable.”
Kulhanek finished the ASCS Gulf South season tied for the lead in wins, top fives (nine) and top 10s (12). Unfortunately, he missed advancing into one feature after another driver crashed into him while in a transfer position during a B Main.
“Just by being in the A Main that night we would have won the championship,” he said. “I felt like we were the championship contending team we set out to be. It just didn’t work out in our favor. It was disappointing. I wanted to win the championship to give my car owner a good way to go out.”
Kulhanek also scored a pair of victories at Bronco Raceway Park in Cleveland, Texas, and he finished the season with 15 top fives and 18 top 10s in 22 races.
Now the focus shifts in a new direction for Kulhanek, whose goal is to purchase a 410ci engine so he can start the 2016 season at the 2nd annual Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown at Cocopah Speedway in Somerton, Ariz., the first two weeks in January.
“As of right now I have zero plans on running full time with any series,” he said. “I want to jump around and race wherever I want to race. I’ve been doing the same thing the last few years. Now I’m the owner and the driver I will race the schedule I want to race and enjoy the places I get to go. Ultimately I’d love to race more, but it’s all depending on what comes up this winter sponsor-wise. Right now I’m going to be limited on how much racing I’ll get to do.”
Fans can become involved as Kulhanek is offering a unique opportunity for the famed Knoxville Nationals next year. For as little as $25 Kulhanek will add your name to his race car for the prestigious event at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, in August. “I want to thank all the fans for sticking by me as well as my sponsors for their support,” he said. “I also want to welcome ASI Racing Engines and Alcon Construction to the team for the 2016 season. I’ve been working hard to prepare and I’m really looking forward to getting things rolling.”
