Inside Line Promotions – QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (March 27, 2018) – Joshua Shipley continues to improve in every race he enters this season.
Shipley earned his first top-five finish of the season last Saturday at Arizona Speedway during an ASCS Southwest Region event, which began with a high pill draw.
“We do pill draw racing with ASCS,” he said. “Of course, I drew No. 49, which put us way in the back.”
With a total of 19 cars and two heat races, Shipley started ninth out of 10 cars in his heat. The Verville Motorsports team made wholesale changes to the car that were for the better, which was a positive after the team struggled throughout their first race of the year.
“The track was a bit rough and it slicked off bad in the heat race,” Shipley said. “I finished sixth in the heat and we took it for what it was.”
Shipley fell two spots shy of making the feature redraw and he lined up 10th in the A Main.
“We were really good,” he said. “By Lap 9 I was passing for third place. Ahead of me though it looked like the second-place car got knotted up in the wall. The only way I could miss him was by spinning the car.”
Being sent back to last place didn’t discourage Shipley. He charged back through the field and once again found himself in third place.
“The track was locked down rubber all the way across,” he said. “We were fast, but I messed up a bit and lost a couple of spots. I could feel the tire coming apart when I made that mistake.”
Biding his time and his tire, Shipley backed it down to half throttle with the hope of finishing the race. His decision was smart as he brought home a fourth-place finish.
“The car was absolutely awesome to drive on Saturday,” he said. “I have to give a shoutout to Maxim Chassis, Shaver Engines and Benic Shocks. It wouldn’t have been such a great car without those people and parts.”
Shipley will return to ASCS Southwest Region competition this Saturday at Central Arizona Speedway in Casa Grande, Ariz. He enters the event ranked third in the championship standings – only 20 points behind the leader.
