Inside Line Promotions – ROSSBURG, Ohio (April 24, 2018) – Alex Hill held on to score a top-10 finish with the K&L Ready Mix NRA Sprint Invaders on Saturday at Eldora Speedway despite battling a mechanical problem.
Hill got off to a solid start in qualifying with a lap that was under the track record and fourth quickest overall out of the 27-car field. Meanwhile, her teammate, Sam Hafertepe Jr., set the new track standard for 360ci winged sprint cars.
“We were both fast and under the old track record,” Hill said. “It was kind of surprising because it was sort of a day race since we started at 4 p.m.”
Hill’s qualifying run slotted her in the third starting position in her heat race.
“I didn’t have a very good start in my heat,” she said. “I left a bit of a gap at the start and fell back to fifth. I was able to pass a car with about three laps to go and get to fourth.”
Hill started 10th in the 20-car A Main.
“I ran the bottom at first and was able to move up to eighth, but the top was still faster so I moved up there,” she said. “I had caught a couple of cars in front of me when my motor lost a cylinder after a plug wire came off.
“I was still able to try to make a pass for seventh in the next turn, but when I cut down under him I got in the slick and spun out with six laps to go,” she said. “I restarted 10th because the cars after that had been lapped. I didn’t know what was wrong with the motor so I just kind of took it easy for the rest of the race so I wouldn’t ruin it.”
Hill’s 10th-place result marked her first top 10 of the season.
“I was really happy with the way things went until the plug wire came off,” she said. “The car was comfortable and fast.”
Hill also planned to compete with the NRA Sprint Invaders the previous night at Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio, but that race was canceled because of rain.
She will rejoin the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com this Friday at Paducah International Raceway in Paducah, Ky. It will be the first visit to the track by both Hill and ASCS.
“It will be another new track for me, but I’m looking forward to it,” she said. “I enjoy going to new tracks.”
