Hill Comes Up One Position Shy of Making Short Track Nationals A Main

Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Oct. 9, 2018) – Alex Hill experienced a competitive weekend during the 31st annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway.

The 18-year-old’s weekend concluded with her finishing just one position shy of qualifying for her first Short Track Nationals main event during Saturday night’s ASCS Mid-South Region finale.

“We had a pretty decent weekend, especially on Saturday,” she said. “It was disappointing that we were just one spot from making the main event since that was our goal. But it felt good to be competitive against a large field of cars in one of our biggest races of the year.”

Hill’s night on Saturday began with her starting on the outside of the front row of her heat race.

“It hurt a bit that we had to start on the outside since there was less traction there,” she said. “(Seth) Bergman got by me early, but then I had a pretty good race with a guy for second. I slid him a few times in the final laps, but couldn’t make it stick and ended up finishing third.”

Hill’s heat race finish slotted her eighth on the starting grid in her qualifier.

“I was able to move up some early in the qualifier,” she said. “I ran lower in turns one and two than most of the others and I was able to gain on some of them in that part of the track. I ended up finishing fifth.”

Hill started fourth in a B Main, which transferred the top three to the A Main.

“They were kind of rushing us before the race and I didn’t find out where I was starting until I was in the car,” she said. “I also didn’t know how many were transferring.

“We were hurt a bit again by having to start in the outside row, but we still had a pretty good race. I was racing with John Carney II for third at the end. I was able to pull alongside him a few times, but couldn’t get by him. I didn’t realize it then that we were racing for the final transfer spot.”

Bad luck ended Hill’s night on Friday. Following a fifth-place finish in her heat race, she won the C Main and started 14th in a B Main.

“We had a yellow on the first or second lap,” she said. “I slowed down and someone hit me from behind. I spun and the car rolled over. It wasn’t a lot of damage – just the wings – but it put us out of the race.”

The next competition for Hill will be Oct. 19-20 during the 45th annual Winter Nationals at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com.

“I always look forward to racing at Devil’s Bowl,” she said. “It’s one of my favorite tracks. It’s disappointing to me that we only race there twice a year. I’d like to race there more often.”
