Inside Line Promotions – MURFREESBORO, Ark. (Sept. 12, 2017) – Johnny Herrera recorded a pair of top fives and three top 10s during a tripleheader weekend.

The action began last Friday at Flint Creek Speedway in Colcord, Okla., where he advanced from seventh to fifth in a heat race. That earned enough points to lock into the ASCS Red River Region feature redraw. Unfortunately, Herrera pulled the second-highest number – seven – to start the A Main on the inside of the fourth row.

“When I got into third Dustin (Morgan) was a straightaway ahead of me,” he said. “I started gaining on him and had closed it to six or eight car lengths when Wayne (Johnson), who was leading, blew a tire with a couple of laps to go. That left a green-white-checkered finish. I made a couple of runs at Dustin (for the lead). He did what he had to do to win the race. I put a slider on him the last corner. Instead of sliding up and possibly crashing us both I left him room and he beat me to the line by half a car length.”

Herrera finished second by less than one tenth of a second. It was his 11th podium of the season.

He ventured to I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., on Saturday for an ASCS Red River Region and ASCS Mid-South Region event. Herrera maneuvered from sixth to fourth place in the heat race before he powered from 11th to sixth in the main event.

“I left the car a little too free,” he said. “I probably should have tightened it up a little. Everyone was right there. I think we could have had a top-three car. Normally I’m a guy who is too tight. I worked really hard this weekend to keep the car free. Maybe that’s a good thing that we got it too free and learned what we did.”

The weekend wrapped up on Sunday at Diamond Park Speedway, where Herrera placed second in an ASCS Mid-South Region heat race to earn a spot in the feature redraw. This time he pulled the highest number – eight – to start the main event eighth.

“There wasn’t a lot of passing,” he said. “There was a caution at the start and when we restarted I think we were fifth. The start was about how we all finished. I was able to gain one position.”

Herrera’s fourth-place result was his 18th top five of the season. He was also the Hard Charger Award winner for passing the most cars.

“We had a good weekend,” he said. “We can’t seem to draw worth a darn, but we passed cars all weekend and went forward almost every time we were on the track.”

Herrera will take this weekend off before resuming competition Sept. 21-23 at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., for the 7th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
