Inside Line Promotions – LAWTON, Okla. (July 21, 2015) – Brandon Hanks continued his recent success with a pair of top fives last weekend during an ASCS Red River Region doubleheader.
“We had a really good, solid weekend,” he said. “That’s two or three weekends in a row we’ve been running up front. You can’t run like that and not win eventually. If we keep being this consistent we’ll end up in Victory Lane sooner than later.”
Hanks and the David Smith Racing team opened the weekend on Friday at Creek County Speedway in Lawton, Okla., where a heat race win locked Hanks into the feature redraw. He pulled the No. 4 during the random redraw to line up on the outside of the second row for the main event.
“We started fourth in the feature and got up to second for a while,” he said. “I saw Alex (Sewell) was running the bottom in front of me. I was running the top and he was pretty fast down there. We had a caution. I slid him for the lead on the restart and I started running the bottom. I led for a few laps and then I looked up and he took the top where I had been and went by. Howard (Moore) followed suit and I fell to third.”
Hanks ended with a third-place result, which marked his fourth podium finish of the season.
“I’m always happy with a podium,” he said. “I’m just bummed to lead laps and not win the race. But it’s a good sign we’re running up front.”
The weekend concluded on Saturday at Lawton Speedway, where Hanks began the night by finishing where he started – fifth – in a heat race.
“In the heat race we were all running around the top,” he said. “We didn’t get anybody on the start. When we went in turn one everyone was single file and we stayed that way the whole race. Everybody was going the same speed so you couldn’t slide anybody.”
That lined him up on the outside of the eighth row for the main event.
“We were a lot better in the feature, but we had some heavy traffic,” he said. “The track was kind of tricky. It was right around the top. The only way you could pass was to slide people for position because the track slowed down and the top moved up. There were a few holes you had to watch out for, too. It was a lot of fun. I hate that race ended. We got up to fourth at the end. I really wish we had a caution because I think we were better than a fourth-place car.”
Hanks rallied from 16th to a fourth-place finish, which earned him the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.
He is scheduled to return to ASCS Red River Region competition this Friday at Outlaw Motor Speedway in Wainwright, Okla., and Saturday at Longdale Speedway in Longdale, Okla.
