Inside Line Promotions – MARION, Ark. (March 1, 2022) – Derek Hagar plans to begin his 2022 season this weekend when he tackles the Wingless Short Track Nationals.
I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., hosts the two-day non-wing sprint car event featuring the ASCS Elite Non-Wing Sprint Cars on Friday and Saturday.
“I look at it as any other race,” Hagar said. “We want to go out there, be competitive and try to win the race. Friday pays $1,000 to win and Saturday pays $5,000 to win so it’s a pretty good payout. Hopefully we can capitalize on it and start the year with a bang.
“I feel better this year than I ever have. I’ve been in the gym with a personal trainer three days a week. I’ve lost quite a bit of weight. I feel really good physically and mentally.”
Hagar ran three non-wing sprint car races last year. He was victorious during an ASCS Elite Non-Wing Sprint Cars event last June, when he advanced from ninth to third place in a heat race before winning the feature at Crowleys Ridge Raceway in Paragould, Ark. Hagar placed 15th and 19th, respectively, during the inaugural Wingless Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway last August.
“The win was the first non-wing race we’d run in a while,” he said. “Then we ran the Wingless Short Track Nationals at the end of the summer and we weren’t very good. There’s some things we’re going to change and then hopefully we’ll be better.
“We have to keep our nose clean. Hopefully we have a track where we can move around and pass some race cars. If we get that and keep our nose clean I think we can have a great weekend.”
