Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Sept. 22, 2015) – Derek Hagar registered his season-best result at I-30 Speedway and his 10th podium finish in the past 11 races last Saturday during the Ralph Henson Memorial.
“We had a good night,” he said. “We didn’t have the winning car, but we had a good second-place car.”
That was the position Hagar finished after making a last-lap pass on the tricky track.
“They brought in a bunch of dirt to the race track and changed it up a bit,” he said. “It made for a rough surface to start. It started out pretty heavy. We ended up third in the heat, which put us sixth in points and in the dash.”
Hagar advanced into the dash after maneuvering from fifth to third place in his heat race. He then picked up a position in the dash to line up on the inside of the third row for the 30-lap feature.
“We just rode out the race through the ruts,” he said. “I was more in conserve mode. The race track started out on the bottom with some pretty good moisture. Then it started blowing off a little through the middle and the top. I had a couple of restarts I could roll through the middle and get a good run off turn two. It was so rough you had to be off the gas and straight to drive across the holes. Then you’d get back on the gas. It made for a difficult race, but we figured it out and passed some cars.”
Hagar’s second-place finish continues his summer momentum heading into the 5th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial this Friday and Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. He will pilot a nonwing car for Jack Hockett and David Korte and will drive his winged car both nights.
“It’d be pretty special (to win the nonwing event),” he said. “Last year we got the big trophy for the winged deal and gave (Casey) Shuman a run for his money in the nonwing deal before finishing second. It was great to see a Hockett car win so hopefully that will happen again this year when I’m driving one.”
