Inside Line Promotions – QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (Nov. 27, 2017) – Giovanni Scelzi picked up a pair of seventh-place finishes last weekend during his final outing of the season.
Scelzi was stout during both nights at Arizona Speedway, where he drove for BDS Motorsports during the Copper Classic. He set quick time during qualifying for the 12th time this season on Friday night to open the ASCS Southwest Region doubleheader.
“It was great to qualify well, but it actually hurt us with the format they ran,” he said. “Qualifying set you up for the heat races, which were inverted by six on Friday. But you didn’t get any qualifying points. We started behind Dominic (Scelzi) and D.J. Netto and outside of Willie Croft so we had a stacked heat.”
Scelzi advanced a position to finish fifth, which relegated him to the B Main. He won that race to transfer into the 17th starting position for the main event.
“We were really good on Friday,” he said. “That’s what we’ve been working to hit on. However, in a 25-lap feature you’re not going to pass more than 10 cars. There’s just no time. For us to go from 17th to seventh was a good showing.”
Scelzi maneuvered to a seventh-place finish, which also netted him the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/BI-iTw8rsio.
The weekend wrapped up on Saturday with Scelzi timing in fifth quickest. He then finished where he started – third – in a heat race to lock into the 14th starting spot for the A Main.
“The track rubbered up about halfway through,” he said. “We had a restart with four laps to go and I think we were running 12th. I hit the bottom around the track the last couple of laps and got by about five guys.”
Scelzi’s late move gained him several spots as he placed seventh for the second straight night. It marked his 30th top 10 of the season. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/Zlo-QYubi90.
“I want to thank Bryan Sundby and BDS Motorsports for another opportunity,” he said. “It was a good final weekend. New tracks are always fun and I think we had the fastest car on the track all weekend. It was just a tough format.”
