CG Motorsports- Glenpool, OK (Oct 11th, 2018) – Matt Covington’s Short Track Nationals run was derailed with a flat right rear during the qualifier on Saturday. This event caused Covington to start mid-pack in the B-main, where he ended up missing the final transfer into the big show by one spot.
“We were competitive and fast all weekend, but didn’t have much to show for it in the end,” Matt said. “On Friday night, we ran 2nd from 6th in the heat. But we got stuck in 5th in the qualifier which put us in the B-main. We were able to win it and then drive from the back of the A to a 12th place finish.”
Saturday looked to be a promising run as Covington won his heat. However, he ended up 9th in the second qualifier after contact with the wall punctured the right rear. The results netted him an 8th place starting position in the B-main. Matt was advancing through most of the feature but got stuck in the 4th position, missing the transfer into the feature by one at the checkers.
“The car was good all weekend,” stated Matt. “It was just a stout group of 60 plus cars and we had to have it all line up right without encountering bad luck. We had a shot for a good top-5 run in the main if we could have just got through that qualifier on Saturday. Once we got squeezed into the wall and had that flat, things changed quickly. It went from a good starting spot in the A-main, to a mid-pack B-main start, facing us with a challenge to even make the show. We moved forward and did what we could, but with the stout cars ahead, we just couldn’t get that last transfer spot. But bad luck aside, I’m not disappointed in this weekend’s effort. We will just move on to Dallas and do our best to close out the year with another national win at one of my favorite tracks.”
Up next for Covington is the 45th Winter Nationals at Devils Bowl with the ASCS Lucas Oil Nationals Tour October 25th and 26th.
