Inside Line Promotions – SPENCER, Iowa (Sept. 13, 2023) – Jack Dover garnered four finishes inside the top seven last weekend during the Cyclone Classic.
Dover drove his No. 53 winged sprint car during 410ci action and the Shawn Loos owned 305ci winged sprint car each night at Shelby County Speedway in Harlan, Iowa.
“It was fun and an exciting weekend,” he said.
Friday’s event started with Dover timing in ninth quickest in the 410 sprint car division. He placed fourth in a heat race before hustling from 12th to sixth in the main event. It marked the second-most positions gained.
“In the feature the car got better as the race went on,” he said. “We picked a couple off early down low. Late in the race it got really racy and there were some slide jobs going on.”
Dover won a heat race and advanced from third to second place in the 305 A Main.
“We won the heat race and redrew the No. 3 to start the feature third, but we fell back to fifth,” he said. “There was a late caution. On the restart I thought I had one opportunity and I went up top and got a couple of positions before getting back in line.”
Saturday was similar in the 410 class as Dover timed in 13th quickest and ended fifth in a heat race before powering from 13th to seventh in the feature. That earned the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.
“We had a good car and could maneuver,” he said. “The high side was dominant at the end of the race. I was fifth and on the last lap gave up two spots after hitting some water at the bottom of the track.”
Dover was third quickest in 305 time trials that evening before winning a heat race. He capped the night by finishing sixth in the main event.
“We need to fine-tune the motor a little better,” he said. “I was fighting some issues at the end of the straightaway. Running with 305s it’s all momentum and you can’t give any of it up. I missed the setup a little bit and we were a little too tight.”
Dover also raced on Tuesday with the ASCS National Tour at Clay County Fair Speedway, where he qualified fourth quickest in his group and won a heat race before finishing 13th in the A Main.
“It was throwing dust in hot laps and we weren’t tight enough in qualifying,” he said. “The car was really good in the heat race. In the feature there was about three or four laps early where you could race and then pretty much fall in line after that because of the rubber. It wasn’t an aggressive rubber down. I tried a bunch of different lines, but it seemed there was only one good line for everybody.”
Dover plans to return to action in his No. 53 sprint car on Sept. 29 at Beatrice Speedway in Beatrice, Neb.
