Matt Covington Racing- GLENPOOL, Ok. (March 8th, 2023) Matt Covington ended the weekend with a 5th place and an unfortunate DNS with the USCS at Hattiesburg.
Friday set Covington on the inside of row three for the heat race. He was able to move up through the field and into 2nd by the drop of the checkered flag. His points total placed him 12th in the night’s A feature. Covington began gaining ground early, working into the top-5 by midrace. A caution reset his pass for 4th, having to revert to the last completed lap’s lineup. Due to the track conditions becoming abrasive and taking rubber, the field was reduced to one lane and Matt had to settle for 5th.
On Saturday, the pill-draw dealt Covington another deep heat race starting spot. After making a few passes, Matt’s progress was abruptly put to a halt by two cars getting together next to him. Left with nowhere to go, he was collected into the incident, sustaining enough damage to end his heat race. Covington opted to just call it a night, rather than scramble to make the B-main.
“Friday, we had a fast race car,” Covington commented. “I would’ve liked to have started closer to the front and see what we could’ve done before the rubber came. I usually run pretty well at that track. But 12th to 5th was still a good run. Saturday was just bad luck. The track was good for the heat and I was pretty confident we’d do well. Unfortunately, the night was over before we really got to see what we could do. The front end got torn up along with a handful of other parts. Since it wasn’t a national points night, we decided to not rush and just focus on fixing everything before next weekend at Magnolia.”
Up next for Matt and team is the USCS Tour at Magnolia Motor Speedway for two nights of racing on Friday and Saturday. This will be the final tune up before the heart of the season starts with the first ASCS National Tour race at Devil’s Bowl the following weekend.
