CG Motorsports- GLENPOOL, Ok. (May 18, 2016) Matt Covington had a pair of solid nights during this past weekend at the Texas Motor Speedway. Matt was able to pick up a 7th place finish on Friday night, and a 5th place finish on Saturday with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
Matt and the team took on the first night of the TMS double header weekend Friday night.
After a mid-pack draw, Covington rallied in the heat to finish 3rd from the 7th starting spot. He then finished 4th from 5th in his qualifier. That ranked him 7th in overall points heading into the main event, starting him inside row 4 for the feature.
Matt struggled in the feature from the start for the first few laps. His car was loose early in the race, causing him to fall outside the top-10 before the track took rubber and tightened the car up. Covington was then able to charge back into the top-10 as the buildup of rubber brought him more speed. When the checkers fell Covington had reclaimed his starting position of 7th.
Saturday night Covington and the crew prepped the car for another strong run based on what they learned from the previous night’s effort.
Covington’s draw landed him in the front row of the 5th heat. He was able to get ahead on the start, passing the inside car, and led all 8 laps to come home with the heat win. Matt then advanced from 5th to 3rd in his qualifier, gaining enough passing points to lock into the re-draw.
The Saturday night re-draw was formed from the four lock-ins from Friday and the next four with the highest point totals from Saturday night’s heats and qualifiers. Covington walked away from the re-draw with the 5th starting position for the A-main.
The 5th position put Matt in the third row of the feature. At the drop of the green, Covington competed with the leaders for a handful of laps before the track started to take rubber. By the time Matt found the rubber toward the bottom of the race track, he was stuck in the 5th position. He had to follow the leaders until the checkers waved, finalizing his finishing spot. Once again he ended the feature where he had started.
“This past weekend was a tad disappointing for me. But all-in-all it was a very solid showing for our team,” stated Covington. “We had a fast car on Friday, but we set up for the rubber early and it took the track longer to come to us than expected. And by the time we were finally able to gain some speed, it was just too late to make up lost ground. Saturday we started out faster in the feature, but our starting position and the track conditions prevented us from moving forward. We burnt tires off all weekend. I would have liked to get a few more spots both nights, but I’m still proud of the effort. I’d like to thank my crew and all our supporters for giving us the chance to have such a positive, overall weekend. All we can do is keep learning from our mistakes and do our best to try for a win next weekend. The speed and consistency is there, we just need to pick up a win and get on a roll.”
