Covington Scores a Pair of Fourth Place Finishes at Black Hills

CG Motorsports – Glenpool, Ok. (July 20, 2017) Matt Covington scored a pair of 4th place finishes during the doubleheader weekend with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at Black Hills Speedway.

Friday night’s pill draw dealt Covington the 9th starting position in his heat. However, he was able to capitalize on the bad luck by charging to the front for the win in his XXX Chassis/ A-Rock Materials mount. He earned the FSR Radiator High Point Driver of the Night award as a result. The redraw proved to be more favorable, landing Matt in the 4th starting position for the feature.

With the feature underway, Covington remained most of the race inside the top-5. His main goal was to secure a lock-in position for Saturday. The surface took rubber, causing the leaders to stay locked into the rubbered-up groove. Passing opportunities were limited. Matt successfully attained his goal when the checkers flew and achieved a lock-in by coming home 4th.

Due to the lock-in, Covington and the team did not have to participate in Saturday night’s heat races. Luck favored Matt in the top-four redraw by granting him the pole starting position for Saturday’s A-main finale.

At the drop of the green, Covington got the jump on the start, leading the field aboard the T&L Foundry/Wesmar machine. With lap ten approaching, Matt began to get some pressure for the lead from Aaron Reutzel. The pair slid and crossed each other up, dicing back and forth for a couple of laps before Aaron gained the lead. Matt fell back to second, then lost two more spots on a restart. Ultimately, Matt was forced to settle for 4th by the feature’s end.

“We had another strong weekend,” stated Matt. “We were able to get a couple of top-5s and stay consistent. Friday night played out about as good as it could under the race circumstances. We got the heat win from the back and finished the 4th in the feature and got the lock-in. The track ended up taking rubber and it makes it hard to pass or advance in those conditions. Saturday night I wish we could have got the win, but we were just a little off and my motor wasn’t taking off as well as I’d like it to. Aaron was good and I fought him off as long as I could, but getting two 4th place finishes in one weekend isn’t anything to feel bad about. Me and Tyler are going to take this weekend off and get everything re-stocked and finetuned for next weekend and both the Knoxville 360 and 410 Nationals.”
