Covington Motorsports- GLENPOOL, OK. (July 23, 2015) Matt Covington had a solid pair of top fives along with an unfortunate DNF during this past week’s action with the ASCS National Tour.
Matt was able to pick up an 4th place finish last night at Gillett Thunder Speedway, a 5th place finish on Saturday at Billings Motorsports Park, along with a DNF Friday night to recap this past weeks action.
On Friday night, Matt and the team took on Electric City Speedway in Montana for the first night of the weekend’s action.
After a good draw and start, Covington finished 2nd in his heat. The result lined Matt up in the 13th position for the feature.
In the feature, Matt was able to quickly move forward for most of the race and work himself solidly into the top-10. Covington worked hard to crack the top-five after working himself into sixth with a few laps to go. Unfortunately Covington’s night would come to an early end after making contact with the wall while in the sixth position.
Saturday night Covington and the crew prepped the car before making the trip to Billings Motorsports Park to close out the Montana weekend with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series.
After the draw, Matt found himself with the 3rd starting spot in the night’s 4th heat race. The heat race provided a challenge as it was stacked with tuff National competition. Matt raced hard with the leaders, but had to settle for the third place finishing position in the heat.
The result lined Matt up in the 16th position for the feature, being the last car in from the heat race points.
In the feature, with a fast race car, Covington was able to charge forward for most of the race and work his way toward cracking the top-5 as the laps wound down. With the checkers waiving Covington had managed to grab the hard charger award for the night and work himself from 16th to 5th to earn a solid top-5 effort from the back.
Matt and the team would take the next few days to prep the car and then travel to Gillet Thunder Speedway in Wyoming for a mid-week race on Wednesday night.
With a good pill draw, Covington was able to start the heat race from inside the second row.
Matt took advantage of a good starting spot in the heat and walked away with the win by over half a straightway.
Covington advanced to the redraw after the heat effort. After the redraw, Matt found himself starting the feature from the front row and the coveted pole starting spot.
At the drop of the green Covington fought hard to hold on to the lead but found himself trailing the leader by lap five. Matt raced throughout the feature fighting to stay inside the top-five with a very dry slick race track. Battle through lap traffic with the leaders, Covington would swap back and forth between the third and fourth position before settling for the 4th spot and the second top-five in a row at the checkers.
“This past week, including last night, has been a huge step forward and a positive for us,” stated Covington. “We had a decent night Friday and were able to go forward in the heat and feature, but I got in the wall late trying to push it too hard or we could have very easily had three top-fives in a row. Saturday was good night and we again showed speed. We had a very tuff heat and wasn’t able to get the passing points we needed, but we made the best of it and charged forward in the feature and was able to pick up the hard charger award. Last night was a bummer to start on the pole of the feature and not win, but that is a surface that’s been our weakness this year. The track was slick and I got the wing too far back at one point and got the car too tight which resulted in a lost spot. But to still come home 4th and make the gains we did, is a huge step in the right direction. I am proud of the effort and gains we have made. Ryan has been giving me great cars and I think we going to win one before long and we will just keep working hard until we do. I am ready to get going this weekend and race Friday and then go to Knoxville on Saturday.”
