Covington Ready For Lake Ozark After a Pair Of Top-5’s at I-96

CG Motorsports-Glenpool, OK (May 23rd, 2019) Matt Covington is ready for Lake Ozarks Speedway this weekend after a pair of top-5’s last week at I-96. Covington took over the series points lead as a result of his 4th and 5th place finishes.

Friday night, Covington secured a spot in the redraw as a result of his combined heat and qualifier efforts. He started 4th in the heat and was able to gain two spots, positioning him to start 5th in the 3rd qualifier. During that race, he proved capable of claiming 2nd at its end. The redraw dealt him the 3rd spot for the A feature. Matt battled in the top four positions throughout the entire main and ultimately earned 4th as the checkers flew.

Saturday saw Covington grab the pole position in the lock-in redraw. However, the feature did not go as planned. Matt had to fight his tight Triple X mount to attain a 5th place finish to close out the weekend.

“It was a frustrating weekend for us,” stated Matt. “Most would be happy with a pair of top-5’s, but I was not satisfied. When we have opportunities to start in the front like that, we need to get a win or at least a podium. We were just way too tight both nights. I was losing too much ground and momentum going through the center, having to wait on it. That really hurt our corner exit speed. Friday was just a guessing game on how the track surface was going to turn out and we adjusted the car the wrong way. Saturday we should have freed it up even more than we did. But I also had bleeder issues and lost air pressure, making the tightness worse. It’s just fortunate that we were able to get the finishes we did and end up taking over the points lead. But it’s way too early in the season to stress about points.”

This weekend the 95 will be at Lake Ozark Speedway for the Saturday and Sunday night action with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. He hopes to make better set-up decisions and utilize any opportunities he may have at starting up front to their full potential.
