CG Motorsports: June,1, 2017 – Matt Covington took advantage of the Memorial Day weekend and got in three nights of racing. Covington ran two nights with the ASCS Gulf South Region, earning a 10th and 6th place finish, and then with the NCRA the final night that resulted in a podium and 3rd place finish.
“Friday night at RPM was one I’d like to forget,” stated Matt. “We drew in the back of the heat. But I was able to capitalize and come home 2nd, which put us in the redraw for the feature. I was just feeling the track during warm up laps and wound up spinning out before the feature even started. Dealing with my hand issue, we’ve made some changes to the power steering that I’ll have to get used to. Because we had to get a second push, we got sent to the rear. We managed to gain some ground and battled up to 10th by the end of the feature. It was a little embarrassing and frustrating, but I think I’m getting a better feel for the new power steering adjustments.
On Saturday, Covington joined the Gulf South again for a race at Devil’s Bowl. “We just had one of those nights where we weren’t bad, but weren’t great either,” said Covington. “We won the heat so I got to start up front in the feature. We got boxed in on the start and I couldn’t really go anywhere. I ended up losing a few spots and had to settle for 6th at the end. Devil’s Bowl is usually one of those places we run really good at, but we just didn’t have the forward momentum we needed.”
With a rainout at Kilgore on Sunday, Matt and the team trucked up to 81 Speedway in Wichita for Sunday night’s NCRA $3,000 to win race.
“We had a good shot at winning on Sunday night”, said Matt. The car was good and I was able to find the rubber early into the feature. We had to start 8th and worked our way into the top-5 early on. By the time I got to Wayne, who was in 2nd, everybody had found the rubber and were just as fast. I got by Wayne once, but then I made a mistake late in the feature that allowed him to get the spot back. After that, the track was locked down and we made no further progress, but maintained the 3rd position until the checkers. It was a solid run and a good way to cap off the weekend. We will take this weekend off and get everything stocked and loaded for speedweeks and the summer run out in the northwest.”
