CG Motorsports – Glenpool, Ok. (July 13, 2017) – Matt Covington earned a top-10 and top-5 finish during the Grizzly Nationals this last weekend with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader.
Friday night’s action, at Gallatin Speedway, saw Covington go from 3rd to 2nd in the heat, earning him the 11th starting position for the feature.
During the feature event, Matt was able to work his way up to 7th, despite the rubbered-up track surface. His night ended with a solid 7th place finish.
“We had a good car on Friday and had made some progress about the time the track took rubber,” he said. “I did what I could early and got up into the top-10 and 7th about midway. I tried to make a couple moves but ending up losing spots by leaving the rubber. Fortunately, we were good enough to get those spots back. But, towards the end, everybody was just holding their line making it difficult to move forward any. But it still was a decent run for us.”
Saturday night began with Covington walking away from the draw table with a deep starting position for the Heat.
Despite starting 7th in the heat, Matt was able to capitalize and earn the night’s FSR Radiator High Point Driver title after charging from 7th to 2nd. His efforts landed him in the redraw where he unfortunately drew the 7 pill, placing him 4th row inside for the feature.
The feature track conditions were the same as the previous night, leaving the field to navigate a rubbered down surface. Matt was able to gain two positions and work into the top-5, but was then forced to fall in line in order to save his tires. He managed to maintain his place in 5th until the checkered flag waved.
“The track took rubber again,” Matt said. “I did my best to move forward early but, once I got into the top-5, I couldn’t do much more. We had another good car and I am proud of the effort we have put together lately. I can’t say enough about Tyler and all the hard work and hours he’s put in this year, especially this last month on the road.”
The fifth-place result earned Matt his 27th top-10 of the season and extended the streak to 13 consecutive races with a top-10 finish.
Covington and team will resume action with the ASCS National Tour this Friday and Saturday at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D.
