CG Motorsports- GLENPOOL, Ok. (Sept. 29, 2016) Matt Covington had a strong showing during the ASCS National, Hockett/McMillin Memorial triple header weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway. Covington came home 10th, 6th, and 15th over the course of all three nights.
On night one of the three-day race weekend. Covington was able to make the main and charge from 21st to 10th in the feature, after a deep pill draw put Covington in back of the heat which resulted in a trip through the B.
On Friday night, Matt and the team took on night two of the Hockett/McMillin Memorial triple header weekend looking to build on momentum from the first night.
Covington was able to go from 6th to 2nd in the heat and 4th to 3rd in the qualifier to earn the 11th starting position for the feature. Matt worked from the 11th spot in the main to bring his A-Rock Materials/Triple X chassis home 6th at the drop of the checkers in the A-main.
Saturday night had Covington and the crew prepping the car for what he hoped to be another strong run on the final night of the three-day affair, after back to back solid performances the previous two nights.
After a deep pill draw once again, Matt had his work cut out for him landing the 7th starting spot in the heat. Covington made the best of starting in the back and charged from 7th to 2rd in the heat to advance to the nights second qualifier. Covington was able to maneuver from 6th to 4th in the qualifier and lock into the nights A-main starting in the 11th position.
At the drop of the green, Covington battled to advanced towards the front, but would be challenged with a failing brake system. Matt was fighting hard to manhandle his mount as the field raced through traffic, but it became harder and harder as the laps clicked away. Ultimately Covington would have to settle for the 15th finishing position. All was not lost as Matt and Tyler where able to pick up the overall weekend hard charger and crew chief award for passing the most cars over the entire race weekend.
“This past weekend was a solid effort for us and a strong showing for our team against a stout field of 60 plus cars,” stated Covington. “Despite our horrible pill drawing skills, small motor issue, and brake troubles we still had very fast cars every time we hit the race track and made the features, coming home with solid finishes every night. I am very proud of the effort and I would just like to thank Tyler, Jerry, and dad for all their hard work all weekend. It was very cool for me to receive the Jesse Hockett hard charger award and Tyler to get the Daniel McMillin Crew Chief award. I was very happy and proud of Tyler for winning that award. I can’t think of a more focused and harder working guy than Tyler and he deserved it. He has been a great asset to myself and the team, and I am very thankful for all he does along with the time he puts in. We will be at I-80 this weekend and keep plugging away as the season winds down. Me and Tyler are focused to continue to work hard and see if we can’t get a win along with some strong top-5s as we close out the year.”
