Fort Worth, TX | April 9, 2018 – With another weekend of cancellations all across the state, Brady Bacon decided to escape Indiana’s treacherous weather and head south to compete with the ASCS National Tour at the Texas Motor Speedway. A former full-time competitor with the series from 2010-12, this weekend featured Bacon behind the wheel of the James Cooper owned Sawblade.com No. 28X entry. Following a 12th-place finish in Friday’s opener, Bacon capped off the weekend by earning his 14th-career ASCS National victory in dominating fashion. Advancing from seventh to the lead in 13 laps, the “Macho Man” set a torrid pace at the Fort Worth, Texas facility and ran away with his first win of the 2018 season.
“It was really great to race here this weekend,” Bacon said in victory lane. “I’m from Oklahoma originally, but I don’t get to race close to home as much anymore, so this was special to have my parents and some of my lifelong friends here. I just wish my wife and kids could have been here, but I know they’re watching from home.”
On the heels of his 19th-to-12th bid in Friday’s feature, Bacon and the Sawblade.com team returned with new life on Saturday. Winning his heat race from the pole, Bacon snagged a seventh-place starting position in the 30-lap finale of the Tony Stewart Presents Texas Sprint Car Nationals. However, the night didn’t come without adversity, as the crew was forced to thrash on the car following heat race action to install a new steering system.
Taking the green flag in the feature from the inside of the fourth row, Bacon quickly maneuvered into the top five and had snuck into the third position by lap seven. Working by Seth Bergman for the runner-up spot on lap 11, Bacon then set his sights on the race leader, Tony Stewart. Tracking down the former NASCAR Cup Champion, Bacon made the winning pass on the 13th circuit and never looked back. Leading the final 17 laps aboard the Sawblade.com No. 28X, Bacon pulled away to an impressive 2.1 second advantage over second-place finisher, Sammy Swindell.
“After that heat race we had to change the steering gear, pump, box, just about everything, but these guys busted their butts and got us back out there,” noted Bacon. “I just have to thank James Cooper for the opportunity to run his car and thankfully we were able to put it all together and get the win. It’s always good to get one this early in the year.”
On tap next for the Indiana resident is a trip back home and a return to the USAC National Midget Series with Frank Manafort Racing. Running the No. 76M midget, Bacon and FMR will compete in this weekend’s “Kokomo Grand Prix,” a doubleheader at Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, Indiana on Friday and Saturday night.
