Inside Line Promotions – CALIFORNIA, Mo. (July 26, 2017) – Josh Baughman earned his second straight top-10 finish in the 360ci winged sprint car class at Knoxville Raceway last Saturday to highlight a busy weekend.
“I feel like our 360 program is solid,” he said. “We have room to improve, but I think we stand on good ground. We have a way to go with our 410 program. We’re working hard at it.”
The weekend began on Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, where Baughman did double duty for the second time this season.
He qualified 21st quickest, placed eighth in a heat race and 23rd in the main event in the 410 class.
“It’s tough whenever you get so far behind like we did in qualifying,” he said. “Dirty air is critical and when you’re starting at the back of a heat race and the back of the main event your car has to be flawless and you have to be perfect as a driver to pass a bunch of cars.”
Baughman set himself up better in the 360 class that night by timing in ninth quickest during qualifying before maneuvering from fourth to win a heat race. That started him on the inside of the third row for the main event.
“Our goal is to prepare for the 360 Knoxville Nationals and this was one of the final opportunities of the season to get everything dialed in,” he said. “We didn’t quite hit it right in the main event and mostly maintained just outside the top five. It was a good night to pick up a top 10 and learn more about the track and our program.”
Baughman posted an eighth-place finish.
The weekend concluded on Sunday at Double X Speedway, where Baughman scored his lone victory this season during his most recent visit. He opened Sunday’s show by finishing where he started – third – in an ASCS Warrior Region heat race. That earned enough points to lock into the feature redraw, in which he pulled the No. 3 to start the main event third.
“We ran third pretty much the entire race,” he said. “We were there to contend for the win at times and we were about to finish third when the cushion bit us at the end.”
Baughman was running third when he got upside down after the cushion snagged his race car and sent him flipping off the track. He was credited with an 11th-place result.
Baughman is scheduled to compete this Saturday at Knoxville Raceway and Sunday at Mason City Motor Speedway in Mason City, Iowa, with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
