Giovanni Scelzi Earns Two Second-Place Finishes at Grizzly Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – BELGRADE, Mont. (July 10, 2017) – Giovanni Scelzi produced a pair of runner-up results during his debut in Montana last weekend at the Grizzly Nationals.

Scelzi received a call in the middle of last week from Bryan Sundby of BDS Motorsports, who offered an opportunity to compete at the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader hosted by Gallatin Speedway.

“It was a last-minute deal and since we had the weekend off with Roth Motorsports we headed to Montana,” Scelzi said. “I want to thank Dennis and Teresa Roth as well as Todd Ventura for letting me go and thanks to Bryan and everyone at BDS Motorsports for the opportunity.”

Scelzi took advantage of the opportunity as he charged from fourth to win a heat race during his debut on Friday night.

“I’d never raced an ASCS race so it was different not qualifying to start the night,” he said. “We drew the No. 39 and that started me fourth in the heat race. I got to second on the start and a yellow came out. We went back to a double-file restart. I think we had a couple of those. The guy on the outside front row ended up wrecking so I lined back up second and took the lead on the start.”

That earned enough points to lock into the feature redraw, in which Scelzi pulled the No. 4 to start the main event on the outside of the second row.

“We got right to second off the bat and rode around,” he said. “The rubber started to come about five laps in. I was behind Wayne Johnson and was faster, but it was hard to make a move. Late in the race I tried to make a move and fell out of the rubber. Seth Bergman passed me and we rode in third. Seth ended up blowing a tire coming out of turn four on the last lap and I passed him to get second.”

The second-place finish locked Scelzi into the feature redraw for Saturday’s show. He pulled the No. 3 during the random redraw to start the main event third.

“We knew we had speed from the night before,” he said. “We got right to second and about five or six laps in we drove around Aaron Reutzel for the lead. I got too aggressive around lapped cars in the rubber. It gave Wayne an opportunity to pass me and after that happened I didn’t have an opportunity to pass him back.”

Scelzi’s runner-up result was his 14th top five this season.

“It was cool to have two second-place finishes in a car I hadn’t driven in and at a track I hadn’t been to,” he said. “To go in there and be that competitive, it was a really good weekend.”

Scelzi will return to Roth Motorsports this weekend when he will compete in a 360ci winged sprint car show at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., on Friday before returning to the bullring on Saturday for a King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series race.
