Masse Scores Sixth Consecutive Top-10 Finish to Start Season

Inside Line Promotions – BILLINGS, Mont. (July 9, 2019) – Cody Masse earned his sixth top-10 finish in as many races this season during an ASCS Frontier Region race at Big Sky Speedway last Saturday.

Masse began the evening by overcoming a poor heat race draw to qualify for the feature redraw.

“We started eighth in our heat race, but we were able to move up a few spots and finish fifth, which put us into the second half of the redraw for the feature,” he said.

Masse pulled the No. 6 to line up for the evening’s main event from the sixth starting position.

“We had an okay start and kind of settled into sixth early in the race,” he said. “I was running the bottom and then got passed by Jeremy McCune on the outside so I decided to move up and try that out.

“The car was good up there and I was able to run some fast laps until it started to fade a bit on me and I got passed on the bottom by Damon McCune. That was a little frustrating since I love running the bottom, but I got passed there after moving to the top. It kind of seemed like I was in the wrong spot all the time.

“We went 25 laps non-stop so I didn’t have a lot of time to think about what to do and adjust. I moved around a little more after that and the car kind of faded toward the end of the race. We had a right rear tire chunk out on us and lost some grip near the end.”

Masse took the checkered flag in eighth place.

“It wasn’t a super exciting result, but another solid top-10 finish for us,” he said. “We’re definitely happy about that. But we were a little disappointed not to be in the top five this week. I think that’s where we should be running. But we finished 13th and 18th in our two races in Billings last year and second and eighth there this year so we’ve definitely improved. We’re doing well. We just have some more work to do.”

Masse is looking forward to his biggest racing event of the year this Friday and Saturday when Gallatin Speedway in Belgrade, Mont., hosts the Grizzly Nationals featuring the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

“We’re really excited for the Grizzly Nationals,” he said. “It’s definitely the marquee event on our schedule. It’s gained a lot of traction and has become one of the top races on the ASCS National Tour.

“We were fortunate to make the feature both nights there last year and our goal is to do the same this year. We’d really like to improve on our best ASCS National Tour finish, which was 17th in last year’s race. There should be another good-size field of quality cars there so you have to be on your game every lap all weekend.”
