Dallas in the Rear View, Covington Looks to I-30 to Rebound

Matt Covington – Glenpool, OK. (March, 23rd 2022) Matt Covington and team did not start the 2022 season off as hoped with the Lucas Oil ASCS National tour. Raw speed was the only positive to bring home from the weekend after two DNFs in the features netted a 22nd and 23rd place finish at the famed Devil’s Bowl Speedway.

“We could break down both nights but honestly, they were a mirror of each other that hopefully stays in the rear-view mirror,” stated Covington. “Both nights we had mechanical issues in hot laps/qualifying that started us deep in the heats. Luckily, I think speed-wise we are in a better position than we ever have been and we were able to motor towards the front and gain enough passing points to make the A-Main. But then we were faced with issues that sent us pit side both nights early in the features. Saturday did give me some hope and relief because before we pulled off. We were railing the top and passed some good cars, sitting in 3rd before our luck ran out again. Depending on when the rubber came in, I think we had the speed and car to get out front. But is what it is now, and just have to fight out of the hole. We’ve already pinpointed the issues and can hopefully put them behind us going forward. I do need to thank Matt Howard for his hard work last weekend. We had to thrash both nights to get back on the track between races and I know he was tired and gave all he had. Also, a big thanks to Vern and all the supporters we have this year making it possible for us to travel up and down the road chasing the tour this season.”

Up next for Matt and the team is Hammer Hill and I-30 Speedway for a weekend of Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour action. Covington has had strong runs at I-30 Speedway, picking up the win there during the 2021 ASCS Sprintweek.
