Covington Battles Through ASCS National Tour Opening Weekend

Matt Covington Racing- Glenpool, Ok. (April 25th, 2023) Matt Covington and team kicked off the 2023 ASCS National Tour season at Jackson Motor Speedway on Thursday and Boothill Speedway on Saturday. The results weren’t ideal, but Covington battled through for a pair of top-10’s.

Thursday night’s action at Jackson saw Covington set quick time in his qualifying group followed by a 2nd in the heat race. During the feature, he faded from 6th to 9th after fighting to keep the race car under him.

Saturday proved to be a little better for the Reece Construction/Missile Motorsports Triple X machine with an outside pole position for the heat after a 3rd place qualifying result. Using it to his advantage, Matt jumped out front early and grabbed the heat win. This effort granted Covington the 5th starting position in the feature. During the A, Matt again struggled with finding a comfortable rhythm and fell back a spot to end the night 6th.

“We could break down both nights but honestly, they were a mirror of each other that hopefully we can just put behind us, improve, and build upon,” stated Covington. “We had decent qualifying and heat results, but fell short in the feature with the setup and finding the balance of the car. We were definitely off speed wise from the front runners in the features. We are going to take the next few off-weekends in the National tour schedule to hit some regional races and use it as testing sessions to retune our setup. We got some ground to make up but it’s still early. We have the team and equipment to get things figured out and rolling as the season heats up. I can confidently say that between me, this team, and the people who support us, we have what we need and the drive to put in the necessary hours and effort to achieve the level of performance expected of us.”

Next up for Covington and the team will be some ASCS Warrior region action this upcoming weekend at Popular Bluff Speedway and Legit Speedway Park.
