Covington Rebounds After Knoxville For a Win and Top-5

Matt Covington Racing – Glenpool, OK (August 30, 2023) Matt Covington earned his 5th victory of the season and 3rd ASCS National Tour win of the year this past Friday at Lakeside Speedway. Covington followed up the win with a 4th place run at the Salina Highbanks on Saturday.

Friday began with Covington being the second fastest car in his time trials group. He then went from 3rd to 1st to win the heat, which earned him the 3rd starting position for the feature. After battling and swapping positions for the lead, Matt eventually took the point on lap 8 to claim the win and $5,000 payday.

“We had the balance and speed to put us up front all night,” stated Matt. “It felt good to get the win after struggling the past few weeks, slowly recovering from the Knoxville crash. I wasn’t sure how good I would feel behind the wheel once I strapped in, but it always helps you feel better after running up front or getting a win.”

Saturday night’s ASCS action returned to the fast, banked, oval Highbanks in Salina, Oklahoma. The night began again with Covington being second fastest in his time trials group. A 4th place finish in the heat placed dealt him the 7th starting position for the feature. Matt worked towards the front and challenged most of the race in the top-5 before the track became abrasive with few passing opportunities. At the completion of the race, the official results slotted Matt in the 4th position.

“We were good Saturday, too, but just missed it a little in the heat starting on the inside and the result set us outside the needed invert,” Matt commented. “I found a good line and was able to get a couple spots and get into the top-5 before the rubber came. Once it got abrasive, I was just hitting my marks and trying not to run over the guy in front of me or slip out of the groove. I definitely have a lot of confidence after last weekend and every day my body is healing up. We are rolling good right now and it was great to get the win. But, more importantly, a lot of the credit goes to Steven Lane and Matthew Howard who busted their butt on the car last week and let me focus on my body so I could just get in and drive. I also need to give a thanks again to all the fans, friends, and supporters that reached out to check on me or helped us get home and back going again after Knoxville. It means a lot to me and something I will definitely not take for granted. I’m very optimistic about our performance and hope to keep the momentum going through the end of the year, just taking it one race at a time.”

Up next for Matt and the American Sprint Car Series National Tour is a Friday night clash at Arrowhead Speedway and then Longdale Speedway on Saturday.
